Moldavian kilims
Moldavian kilimsTaking the world of decoration by storm in recent years due to their very popular Art Deco style, these antique kilims with floral patterns have a great and little-known history. Also called Bessarabian kilims, they are woven entirely from sheep's wool in different parts of Moldavia by Turkish-speaking Christian peoples Gagoguz who continue a thousand-year-old tradition of flat stitch weaving. Their patterns are inspired by cartoons (sketches) of French Aubusson tapestries that circulated in Moldavia in the middle of the 20th century, hence their Louis XVI style. |
